Na Kamali’i Nani O Lahaina Hula Halau kumu Jan Kealani Kitaguchi dances the hula “Pua Olena”during the 14th annual Family Caregiver Walk at Queen Ka’ahumanu Center in Kahului on Saturday. Providing the music are Roy Kato, Kealii Lum and Geri Valdriz. The event celebrated the 40th anniversary of Maui Adult Day Care Centers. Executive Director Suzanne Antounian said the walk drew between 200 and 300 walkers raising funds for scholarships and other benefits for island senior citizens. “The most important reason we do this is because growing old and aging is a big blessing,”Antounian said. “Our annual caregiver walk gives us the resources to be able to help people age gracefully.”
Maui centenarians Kazuto Takahashi, 102, and Chiyoko Hiromoto, 101, pose on the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center stage during Saturday’s caregiver walk festivities. Standing with them are Takahashi’s granddaughter Stacy Takahashi (from left), great-granddaughter Jacy Hanada, sister Carol Omuro, county Deputy Director of Housing and Human Concerns Lori Tsuhako and Hiromoto’s caregiver for more than 13 years, Malia Hong.
